Events - Pupils fight for Ashes glory

ASHES fever has arrived in Stafford - three weeks before England take on Ricky Ponting’s boys!
Youngsters from Doxey and Cooper Perry schools are currently battling it out to see who will become the first winners of The Ashes, a local primary schools friendly competition.
Headteacher Jon Dreher (Doxey) and Chris Newman (Cooper Perry) thought it a good idea to play such a competition alongside The Ashes, which get under way on July 8.
The aim was to generate cricket interest at the two schools and help bring the community of Seighford Parish together.
"The competition was an exciting idea, with children getting the opportunity to be the next Kevin Pietersen or ‘Freddie’ Flintoff , as their heroes battle it out for real later on this summer," said Dreher.
"Over the past few months the children of both schools have developed an enthusiasm for cricket and as a result have forged links with Stafford Cricket Club."
The schools have also purchased a replica Ashes trophy, which is being played for over five tests. It is currently 1-1 in the series with three matches remaining, the final match at Doxey Primary on July 17.
It was a superb achievement, considering the children have only been playing the sport since the Easter arrival of new headteacher, Mr Dreher.
"I have been very impressed with the effort and application from the boys and girls and they should be very proud of their achievements," said Dreher.
In a six-team event, Doxey beat runners-up St Pauls to win the trophy. The other participating schools were Castlechurch, St Lawrence, Haughton and Church Eaton.
